James H. "Jim" Winters, Sr., 74, of Morganton died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at his residence. Born October 24, 1936, he was a son of the late Robert Ernest Winters and Elizabeth "Bessie" Whiteside Winters. He was a very devoted father to his children and to his wife of 46 years. Jim had a willing heart and soul to help others in need. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church where he volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader. He was a founding member of the Oak Hill Fire/Rescue, and also served with the West End Fire Department and Burke County Rescue Squad. Jim was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years and served in numerous capacities with the organization.He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Feimster Winters of the home; children, Jimmy Winters, and wife, Kelly, and Dawn Marie Winters, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Gavin Michael Swink, Jordan Kendall Winters, Savannah Mackenzie Longo, and Dawson James Winters; a brother, Robert Ernest Winters, Jr. of Jonas Ridge; and an aunt, Osilene Whiteside Patterson of Fort Mill, SC.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Freshour officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral hour. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke County Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
