Jack W. Patton, 83, of the Chesterfield Community, Morganton, NC, peacefully went to meet his Savior and Lord on Thursday, July 31, 2008 after several years of declining health. Born on April 30, 1925, he was the son of the late John C. Patton and Marie Branch Patton Mull.Jack was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII in the pacific theatre and served in Japan. He was on the U.S.S. Guadalcanal when the ship was hit by torpedoes and had to return to port on its side. Many lives were lost. Mr. Patton retired from Wamsutta Mills where he worked as an electrician.Jack is survived by a daughter, Debbie Patton; a grandson, Cory Hunt; granddaughters, Lorrie Harris, Wendy Houk, and Dana Hensley; a brother, Sammie F. Patton; sisters, Annie Patton Costner, Ethel Patton Smith, and Lena Patton Patrum; sisters-in-law, Ruth Patton and Gail Patton; close friends, care-takers, and family members, Rachel Freeman, Jeff Freeman, Mark Freeman, and Vickie Freeman.In addition to his parents, Mr. Patton was preceded in death by three daughters and a son, Larry W. Patton.The graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Mt. View Baptist Church with Scottie Patton officiating. Military graveside rites will be performed by Valdese American Legion Post #234. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Sossoman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 2608, Morganton, NC 28680 to assist with expenses.
