Jack Carroll, 90, of Morganton, NC, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023.

Born in McDowell County, NC on August 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Luther Carroll and Cora Queen Carroll.

Mr. Carroll’s life was about service to others. He received various decorations for his gallant service during two tours in the Vietnam War with the US Army’s 101st Airborne as a combat medic. He retired from the NC Department of Corrections as a lieutenant before serving eight years as a Burke County Commissioner.

Jack is survived by his wife, Maxine Jenkins Carroll; son, Jack Carroll (Angie); daughter, Scherry Carroll Babb; grandchildren, Meredith Carroll, Hallie Carroll, Austin Carroll, Cameron Carroll, Zach Babb, and Lori Babb; niece, Carolyn Foxx; nephew, Kenneth Nelson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his son, Rickie Carroll; and grandson, Jacob Carroll, who lost his life in service to his country in Afghanistan. His grandson also served with the US Army’s 101st Airborne.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday, May 8, 2023 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter #43 in Morganton.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
