J. C. Moore, 96, of Morganton died Wednesday, January 6, 2021.  Born in Burke County, NC on May 9, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph W. Moore and Barbara Jane Cook Moore.  J.C. was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Moore enlisted in the US Army in 1940.  When WWII started, he was deployed to Europe, including being involved in the invasion at Normandy.  He attained the rank of Sergeant and earned the European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, and 5 Bronze Service Stars.  Upon his release from duty, he began a career in construction that took him to many countries.  He also worked as a deputy and a constable.

J.C. enjoyed being involved with the Burke Shriner’s Club for many years.  He served as president and was given a lifetime membership.  Mr. Moore was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years.

J.C. loved his God and family.  He spent his time gardening, fishing, and taking the family camping.  He also enjoyed having family gatherings for fish fries and cooking.

J.C. is survived by his daughters, Sharon Moore Ferguson (Carl), Peggy Moore Knoelke, and Connie Moore; grandchildren, Gretchen Kelsey Knoelke and Joshua Kincaid; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Brenda Huffman, who was good to check on Mr. Moore, talk with him, and take him food.

In addition to his parents, J.C. was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Huffman Moore; grandson, Elijah Moore Webb; sisters, Annie Lee Moore Stewart, Mary Moore Childers, Virgie Moore Cook, Donnie Moore Tolbert, Mamie Alma Moore, and Sudie Cook Walker; and brothers, Walter Alvin Moore, Cossie V. Moore, and Paul Moore.

A private graveside service will be held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors and masonic rites.  Dr. Jack Hodges will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Burn Center, Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, or to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Bayada Healthcare, and Kindred Healthcare for the support and care given to J.C.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
