Iona Baggett Whisenant, 94, of Morganton went to her heavenly home on Sunday, December 2, 2018 while surrounded by her family.  Born in Kelford, NC on September 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Lee Baggett and Lillian Jones Baggett.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church Deaf Mission in Morganton.

Mrs. Whisenant was a 1945 graduate of the NC School for the Deaf (NCSD).  She had worked at Morganton Full Fashion Hosiery Mill, Skyland Textile, and retired as a Dorm Supervisor from NCSD.  After her retirement, she volunteered as a foster grandparent at NCSD and earned the Governor’s Award for her exemplary volunteer work.

Mrs. Whisenant was a devoted Christian who loved her Lord and enjoyed reading the Bible and other inspirational books.  She favorite hobbies were reading and sewing.

Mrs. Whisenant is survived by her daughters, Mary Lingerfelt (Dennis) and Nan Bush (Randy); grandchildren, Connie Fox (Wendell), Melanie Price (Gary), Adam Beach (Niki), Anna Beach (Austin), and Frank Bush (Brittany); great-grandchildren, Tabatha Fox Huffman (Landon), Morgan Fox, Emma Price, Garen Price, Tyson Beach, Bentley Attaway, and Avery Beach; great-great-grandchildren, Carson White, Malu Huffman, Jude Huffman, and Desmond Huffman; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whisenant was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Adams Whisenant; brothers, Wilson, Robert, and George Baggett; and sisters, Margaret Johnson, Helen Toombs, and Paige King.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 5, 2018 in the parlor of First Baptist Church.  The funeral will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the church.  Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Deaf Mission.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of College Pines Nursing Facility for rendering quality and compassionate service to Mrs. Whisenant.
