Hubert Anthony, 82, of Morganton, NC passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness. Born in Lincoln County, NC on November 7, 1929, he was the son of the late Evan Elbert Anthony and Ovia Gragg Anthony.Hubert was a member of First Church of God in Drexel, where he was involved in the Montreat Sound Coordination for several years. Hubert had worked at several local textile plants, Belk?s Department Store, and was also a Burke County Sheriff?s Deputy under Sheriff Oaks, and a special deputy under Sheriff Wise. Hubert co-founded and operated Anthony Brothers Railroad Construction for 35 years until he retired.Hubert?s passion in life was working on the farm. He enjoyed playing music at his brother?s barber shop where he held the honorary title of ?Chief Cook?. He was very fond of his canine companions.Hubert is survived by his daughter, Sharon Smith and husband, Clifford, of Morganton; grandchildren, Mark Penley and wife, Jaime, and David Penley and wife, Michelle; great-grandchildren, Macey, Morgan, Jimmy, Courtney, and Shaé; and sisters-in-law, Zelda and Norene Anthony.In addition to his parents, Hubert was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Burns Anthony; his second wife, Eva H. Anthony; brothers, Lawrence and James Anthony; and a sister, Mary Florence Cain.The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, December 11, 2011 at First Church of God in Drexel with Reverends Steve Greer and Maxine McCall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center, where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour.
