Howard Lee Smith, 83, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Born in Burke County, NC on June 12, 1943, he was the son of Annie Beatrice Taylor Smith and the late Claudius Amos Smith.
Howard was a veteran of the US Army and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. He loved to travel, especially to the mountains.
In addition to his mother, those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Donna Charlene Poe Smith; sons, Robbie Smith (Brooke) and Tammy Price; step-son, Neil Pearon (Jennifer); grandson, William Smith, III (Dakota); great-granddaughter, Ava Smith; great-grandson, Brantley Smith; and a brother, Ernest Smith (Margaret).
The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Hopewell Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 1 p.m. in the church with Pastor Braden Martin officiating. The graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at Solid Rock Mission Church Cemetery in Marion with military honors provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I am so sorry for your loss. I will forever remember Howard with fond memories. He loved to chase me around daddy's house( Earl Walker) and made sure I got wet in a creek or mud hole. I will miss seeing him around the stores also Love, Judy Walker.
