Hokie "Hoke" Powell Hennessee, 94, of Burke Long Term Care, formerly of Hogan St., Morganton died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, following several years of declining health. She was born in Cleveland County on November 16, 1912 and was a daughter of the late James J. Powell and Caroline Crowder Powell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hennessee; brothers, Clarence, Jacob, Grover, Bon, George, Luther, and Aden Powell; and sisters, Nora Powell, Calvie Van Dyke, Mattie Bridges, Marinda Holland, Essie Devine, Emma Morris, and Lela Holland O’Kelly. Mrs. Powell was the youngest of 15 children all who preceded her in death. She was a committed and dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church for 72 years.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews including Billy Dean Morris and his wife, Betty and Bobby Bridges all of Morganton and sisters-in-law, Margaret Carswell of Shelby and Mary Grigg of Morganton. While she had no children Hoke loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. One of her true joys was spending time with children. She appreciated the simple beauty that children bring to the world.

The funeral will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 20, 2007, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. W. Larry Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.

Mrs. Hennessee’s family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Burke Long Term Care for the exceptional care provided to her. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
