Herbert “Hub” Lail, 89, of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, November 14, 2025.

Born in Burke County, NC on January 24, 1936, he was the son of the late Ralph Lenoir Lail and Myrtle Grace McGallard Lail.

Hub retired from Great Lakes Carbon Plant. He was a sports enthusiast and tremendous fan of the Tarheels, and he was an avid golfer and fisherman. Hub was also a master gardener. Every year he planted a large garden then proceeded to share most of the harvest with his community. He was an amazing uncle and was always supporting his nieces and nephews, including attending all their various sporting events. Hub loved spending time with his family and making everyone laugh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Maxine Powell Lail; sister, Nell L. White; twin brother, Hubert W. Lail (Faye); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Hub was preceded in death by a niece, Donna Kay White.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2025 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. David Orders officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Hub to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Autumn Care of Marion for the excellent care and love they provided.
