Henry Vernon Stewart, 98, of Morganton, NC, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023. He was born on April 11, 1925 in Gaston County to the late James S. and Lilly Barker Stewart. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mable F. Digh Stewart; second wife, Hennie Walker Stewart; brothers, Raleigh, Bill, Arthur, Wayne and Nally Stewart; son, Michael Stewart; grandsons, Danny and Phillip Stewart.

Henry served in the US Navy aboard the USS Carroll. He made fourteen crossings of the Atlantic Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea. He served as a gunner’s mate. Henry retired from Great Lakes Carbon after thirty-eight years of service.

He is survived by his children, James and wife, Sylvia Stewart of Lawndale, NC, Ben and wife, Dana Stewart of Shelby, NC, Ricky and partner, Georgiana Byrne of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter-in-law, Margaret Stewart of Gastonia, NC; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a very special friend, Ardith Greene.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-2pm at Mt. Home Baptist Church. The service will begin at 2pm in the fellowship hall of the church with Rev. John Conrad officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by the US Navy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Home Baptist Church.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry. I loved Henry, just a sweet and caring person. Boy did we have some good times together. I will miss his hugs. Chris and I are so deeply sadden by this. You guys will miss him dearly. Always remember Henry and Mable were Honest, caring, loving couple. I thank God for the wonderful things I learned from your parents. Love you Guys, Chris and Cindy.
