Helen Louise Benfield Browning, 73, of Nebo was released from the bonds of suffering on Sunday, January 17, 2021, after a period of declining health.  Born in Burke County, NC on February 23, 1947, she was a daughter of the late Richard LeRoy Benfield and Rebecca Mary Whisnant Benfield.  Helen was a homemaker and attended Gilead Baptist Church.  She enjoyed cooking, swimming, softball, and music, especially Elvis.  She loved her little dogs.

Helen is survived by her loving husband and caregiver of 57 years, Jerome Browning; daughters, Tammy Smith (Alvin) and Sherry Buchanan; grandchildren, Kendra Buchanan, Emily Buchanan, Steven Smith, and Daniel Smith; great-grandchildren, Camden, Olivia, and Evelyn; sisters, Frances Setzer (Jim) and Nora Benfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by an infant son; brothers, Daniel Whisnant and Leroy, Walt, Ralph, and Larry Benfield; sisters, Mary Lou McDade and “Becky” Price Ramsey; and a beloved niece, Wendy Price.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Friday, January 22, 2021 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Burke Memorial Park with Rev. Douglas St. John officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Burke Hospice for their care and support these last years.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
