Helen Ann Crawford Buchanan, 77, of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, November 18, 2022.

Born in Randolph County, NC on August 1, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Crawford and Ruth Hodge Crawford. Helen was a member of Praise Assembly of God.

Miss. Buchanan was a humble person who touched many lives. She began her career in the Pauline Plant at Alba Waldensian and had a brief stay at Robinson Hosiery Mill. She then held several positions at Grace Ridge Retirement Community and volunteered many hours beyond her time to make sure the residents were well cared for. She finished her career in the housekeeping department of North Carolina School for the Deaf. Helen was proud of the work she performed and always went well beyond the call of duty for not only the students, but staff who admired and adored her. He legacy will always be remember at each of the places she graced with her presence.

Helen also tirelessly gave herself to her family, friends, and the community. She was sometimes described as a pistol, spitfire, and a force to be reckoned with, but she loved and was loved by all. She will be missed. Her laughter will always ring through the halls of the places she visited, and her compassion and love will always be remembered.

Helen is survived by her sons and families, Michael and Tina Buchanan and Jimmy Buchanan and Gary Nance; grandchildren, Brianna and Nathan Buchanan; siblings, Betty Fox, Steve Crawford, and George Crawford; and fur-baby grandchildren, Ava and Rufus.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday, November 25, 2022 at Sossoman Funeral Home. A memorial celebration will follow at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home and will be open to friends and family to speak.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Burke County Friends for Animals, 417 Kirksey Drive, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Mark and I were so saddened to hear of Helen’s passing. When we first found family here in Morganton, she was always so kind to invite us to family get togethers. Her caring spirit will be remembered for many years to come and we excitedly wait to be reunited one set day “over in glory land”. Our prayers of comfort and peace extend to all our family in this hard time of sorrow. May Christ, who comforts our hearts, be with you all today and everyday.

—Mark and Renee Hodges
