Harold Eugene “Gene” Berry, 81, of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017 at his residence surrounded by loved ones.  Born on February 7, 1936 in Burke County, Gene was the son of the late Harold Berry and Minnie Reece Berry.

Gene was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  He retired as a store manager from Winn Dixie food stores which were like his second family.  He also enjoyed spending time volunteering for Toys for Tots.

Left to cherish his memory, are his children, Melanie Berry Byers and husband, Terry and Harold Scott Berry all of Morganton; sister, Shelby Berry Bryant and husband, Billy of Drexel, NC; step-daughter, Amber Byers Moore and husband, Kenny of Charleston, SC; and step-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Baine, and Addison.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Suttles Berry.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 19 2017 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the church with Rev. Larry Cline and Rev. Jack Hodges officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Military honors provided by United States Marine Corps League Table Rock Detachment #1197.

Hello. I was checking to see if my boss when I worked at the Winn Dixie store in Morganton was still alive. He was in deed the best boss that I ever worked for in my life. Those few years were awesome and he was such a great person as well. He treated everyone so good and it made us want to really do a good job for him.
