Gertrude Ruth Mayer, 83, of Forestbrook Dr., Valdese, NC died Friday, January 25, 2008, at Grace Heights following a thirty year battle with Parkinson Disease. She was born in Milwaukee, WI on January 4, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Albert Leonard Davey and Anna Schneider Davey. Mrs. Mayer attended Mull’s Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Mayer was an avid card player and was a member of numerous card clubs in Wisconsin. Since moving to Burke County, Gertrude has been active in gardening both indoor and outdoor plants, baking, and crafts, and was a member of the Thursday Morning Coffee Bowling League at Mimosa Lanes.Left to cherish her memory are her husband Daniel Mayer, of the home; a son, Greg Mayer, of Valdese; a daughter, Barbara Ann Fleming and her husband, Toney, of Morganton; a special daughter, Jeri Mayer, of Morganton; brothers, John Alan Davey and his wife, Bonnie, of Villa Park, IL and Howard Norman Davey, of West Allis, WI; sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Haralson of Wauwatosa, WI and Norma Ann Gatzow, of Waukesha, WI; sister-in-law, Karen Davey of Sussex, WI; grandchildren, Danny Smith, Donny Smith and his wife, Dawn, Deanne Causby, Sheri Toner, and Trent Toner; great-grandchildren, Jimmy Smith, Madison "Madie" Causby, Ava Smith, and Tess Causby; and numerous nieces nephews and friends.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Leonard Raymond Davey, William James Davey, and Richard " Dick" Windeal Davey; and by sisters, Edith Ellen Davey and Mary Ann Davey.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2008, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Allan Barlow officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be Craig Haralson, Danny Smith, Donny Smith, Trent Toner, Jay Mayer, and Jimmy SmithThe family will receive friends an hour before the service.
