Georgia Kincaid Cates, 80, of Morganton died Saturday, February 6, 2021.  Born in Burke County, NC on July 21, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Wilson and Rucker Kincaid.  Georgia was a member of St. Mary’s and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Cates graduated from Oak Hill School and earned her bachelor’s degree in business education from Campbell College.  She then began her teaching career at Drexel High School, NC School for the Deaf, and East Burke High School.  Upon completion of her master’s degree in guidance counseling from Lenoir-Rhyne College, she began school counseling at Oak Hill Junior High School.  She later moved to Freedom High School, from which she retired.

Georgia was an active member in the Sandy Beach Shag Club and the Society of Stranders in Myrtle Beach.  She enjoyed traveling, reading, and especially spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Mrs. Cates is survived by her husband of 60 years, James “Jim” Cates; sons, Bryan Cates (Stephanie) and Christopher Cates; grandchildren, Wilson, Michael, Coral, and Joy Cates; sister-in-law, Iris Ragland (Jack); and brother-in-law, Bill Cates (Filomino).

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2021 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Cemetery with Father Chris Kramer officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 140 St. Mary's Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or to Carolina Caring, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
