George Philip Slaght, 84, of Ridgecreek Drive, Morganton, NC died Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Grace Hospital. Born in Drumbo, Ontario, Canada on February 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Colin Oscar Slaght and Dorothy Stokes Slaght Taylor. George was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He served in WWII with the Canadian Army Tank Corps. George became a U. S. Citizen in 1952 and worked for many years with Pullman Standard in Hamond, IN as plant engineer and in Chicago as a tool designer. Pullman Standard is a manufacturer of railway passenger cars. Following his retirement, he continued to work as an engineering consultant. George and his wife, Mary, moved to Morganton in 1987.George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Stevens Slaght of the home; children, George Steven Slaght and wife, Carol, of Holden, LA and Elizabeth Slaght Kale and husband, Mack, of Polkville, NC; grandchildren, Marilyn Slaght Guitreau and husband, Kevin, Jessica Fisher, Joshua Fisher, and Stephanie Fisher; and great-grandchildren, Zoie Fisher and Dawson Wilson.The graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Cemetery with The Rev. Francis King officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parish hall from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service and also following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Towel Ministry of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 140 St. Mary’s Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or to the Good Samaritan’s Clinic, P.O. Box 3601, Morganton, NC 28680. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
