Garry Clay Fender, 61, of Kela Drive, Morganton, NC died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center following an extended illness. He was born on October 29, 1944 in Yancey County, NC and was a son of Clay Fender and the late Lila Grace Wyatt Fender. Mr. Fender served as a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army from 1963-1969 with three years of service in Germany and three at Ft. Bliss, TX. He was a technician on the Nike-Hercules Missile. He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Sandra Allen Fender, of the home; his son, Martin Fender; his daughter, Marcia Hamm; a brother, Gerald Fender; a sister, Sandra Hall; two grandsons; and one granddaughter.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, 2006, at Forest Hill Cemetery with the Reverends Sandy Curnow and Mike Thompson officiating. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church on Bost Rd. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Faith Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 605, Morganton, NC 28680 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family.
