Freddie Phillips Estes, 93, formerly of Valdese Avenue, Morganton died Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Morganton Long Term Care following a period of declining health. She was born in Caldwell County, NC on September 22, 1917 and was a daughter of the late Fredrick and Julia Keaton Phillips. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Estes was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Estes; her son, David Wallace Estes; brothers, Bill and Don Phillips; and sisters, Lesie Abernathy Dixon, Ruth McKinney, and Ruby Glass.Mrs. Estes was a member of First Baptist Church where she had been active in the Boy Scouts serving as den mother. Freddie was also a member of the Mimosa Chapter 269 of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron. Freddie was proud to have been named Miss Morganton and to represent her community in the Miss North Carolina pageant.Surviving are her grandchildren, Eric Estes and his wife, Anny, of Morganton and Keleigh Estes Hughes and her husband, Jeremy, of Houston, TX; a brother, Charles Phillips of Morganton; sisters, Clyde P. Leonhardt of Morganton and Marie Jamison of Conway, SC; and special friends and health care givers, Larry Whisnant, Threna Gale, and Carolyn Franklin.The family would like to express their appreciation to the staffs of Burke Hospice and Morganton Long Term Care for their excellent care.Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Thomas Bland, Jr. officiating with rites conducted by Mimosa Chapter 269 of the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
