Fred M. Roberson, 95, of Morganton, NC died Friday, January 27, 2017. Born September 28, 1921 in Rutherford County, NC, he was a son of the late Austin Thomas Roberson and Effie Mae Cathey Roberson. Fred was a retired employee of Broughton Hospital where he had worked for over 30 years.  Fred was always active in his church and the community.  He was one of the original members of the Burke County Rescue Squad.  He served for several years on the Morganton Human Relations Committee and volunteered with Burke United Christian Ministries.  In 1995 he was named “Man of the Year.”

Fred was an Eagle Scout and later was a very active leader in Boy Scouts. He served as a member of the Executive Board of the Piedmont Council Boy Scouts and for many years, he was Council Commissioner.  He presented hundreds of Eagle Scout awards and personalized each one with a handmade parchment scroll.

He was a Mason and a member of Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner with the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte.  Fred was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Ella Apple Roberson and Maggie Carpenter Orders Roberson; a son and daughter-in-law, Marshall C. and Shirley Roberson; and siblings, Nell Self, Ethleen Fowler, Austin T. Roberson, Jr. and James Roberson.

Surviving are his daughter, Kathy Roberson of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Marshall C. Roberson, II and Tamara A. Hartman and husband, Shane; a great grandson, Will Woods and wife, Nemessis; a great great granddaughter, Alexia Woods; and a number of nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:50 pm, Friday, February 3, 2017 at Calvary Lutheran Church.  A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 3 pm at the church with the Rev. Paul Carlson officiating. A committal service with Masonic Rites will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, N. King St., Morganton, NC 28655 or to Piedmont Council Boy Scouts, P. O. Box 1059, Gastonia, NC 28053 or plant a tree in memory of Fred.
