Fred Butler, 72, of Old Creek Rd. in Morganton died Monday, September 20, 2010 at Grace Hospital following a yearlong battle with cancer. Born May 13, 1938 in Burke County, he was a son of the late Alfred and Donnie Chapman Butler. Fred attended Salem High School and then served in the US Army. He was a devoted member of Carswell Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Fred first worked in the home construction industry, and then became owner and operator of Butler Sanitation. For many years, he and his wife, Isabell enjoyed trips in their motor home, especially with their close friends, Carson and Carolyn Baker, Ben and Sue Stroupe, and Henry and Edna Carswell. Fred was also an avid golfer.He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Isabell Carswell Butler of the home; sisters, Betty Braswell, Mildred Butler, and Edna Carswell and husband, Henry, all of Morganton; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by sisters, Jessie Cook and Margaret Smith, and a brother, Ted Butler.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Carswell Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. James Greene officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral hour.
