Flora “Flo” Harrill Stines, 90, of Morganton gained her heavenly reward with her family by her side on December 31, 2020. Born in Forest City, NC on September 14, 1930, she was the daughter of the late William B. Harrill and Myrtle Small Harrill.

After graduating high school in 1948, Flo attended Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1951 and worked at Grace Hospital.  She was a proud member of the Grace Hospital Alumni Association.  Mrs. Stines eventually left Grace Hospital to work at Broughton Hospital until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Morganton and a Lifetime Member of the Girls Scouts.  She worked at Girl Scout camp during the summers for many years. She was an avid golfer and was a member of Orchard Hills Golf Course, where she recorded two holes-in-one and two eagles.

Flo loved all sports. She loved to hike and backpack, walking many miles on the Appalachian Trail.  She also hiked with the Over Mountain Victory Trail Marchers.  Flo played softball with the Broughton Hospital Ladies team until the age of 62, as their pitcher. She worked part-time for the City of Morganton Parks and Recreation Department as a softball scorekeeper. Flo was a loyal member of the seniors club at the Morganton Recreation Department, where she went on many trips.

Mrs. Stines is survived by her son, Harrell Stines (Connie); daughter, Karen Rockett (David); beloved grandson Alexander Rockett (Jessica); and great-granddaughter Elliana.  Also surviving are her sisters Gail Hecht (Peter) and Millie Burgess (Gene), several nieces and nephews, and her furry canine protector to the end, Zac.

In addition to her parents, Flo was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Elizabeth; brothers, William Harrill, Jr. and Steve Moore Harrill; sisters Carolyn Doggett, Doris Yelton, Betty Jean Roper, and Martha Jo Deal; and her loyal canine companion, Peanut.

A celebration of Flo’s life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Burkemont Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catawba Valley Girl Scout Council, Burke County Friends for Animals, Medi Home Hospice, or a charity of your choice.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
