Etheleen Mahaffey Smawley, 82, of Smawley Street, Morganton, NC died Thursday, July 13, 2006 following a period of declining health. Born April 9, 1924 in Davidson County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Ira E. and Margaret Aldred Mahaffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elon Smawley. Etheleen was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She retired from Alba-Waldensian in 1971, was a graduate of Morganton High School, and is the last member of her family.
She is survived by her first cousin, Alfred H. Eldred of Tennessee, and her husband's nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Shepherd officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 5388 Mt. Olive Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
