Essie Raye Russ, 90, of Morganton, NC passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Born in Burke County, NC on December 31, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Fred R. Epley and Minnie Lee Finley Epley. Mrs. Russ was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and was considered a wonderful cook. She enjoyed making special ornaments and calendars for her family as well as babysitting her grandchildren.
Essie is survived by her children, Jewel Poteat, Gerald Russ and his wife, Connie, and David Russ, all of Morganton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Huntley; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to her parents, Essie was preceded in death by her husband, William Sidney Russ; a daughter, Mary Russ; a son, Leon Russ; a great-grandson, Jeremy Dean Russ; sisters, Nettie Scott and Belle Duckworth; and brothers, Atlas Epley and Allen Epley.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. John Whisnant officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
