Elsie N. Bartlett, 88, of Valdese, NC, died Thursday, February 2, 2012, following a period of declining health. Born September 6, 1923, in Wynnewood, PA, she was a daughter of the late Leo Lewis Newcomer and Alda Cutler Quimby Newcomer. Elsie was a graduate of Media High School, Media, PA, Class of 1941, and was a majorette with the high school band. She studied at the Peirce School of Business Administration and went on to work as an administrative assistant at several companies including Kraft Foods, from which she retired. She loved the music program at the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton where she was a member and served as the music librarian. Elsie also played handbells with the Chancel Ringers.She volunteered at Grace Hospital where she tested the hearing of newborn babies. Elsie enjoyed square dancing, playing bridge, and needlework of all varieties. Her latest sewing project was knitting baby caps for the medical mission of Dr. Barbara Nagy in Malawi, Africa.

She is survived by children, Elsie Jane Bartlett of Valdese, and Roy G. Bartlett, III and his wife, Jurine of Downers Grove, IL; cousin, Jeanne Parker-Traino of Vincentown, NJ; sister-in-law, Helen M. Bartlett of Bloomingdale, IL; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Roy George Bartlett, Jr.; a brother, Leo L. Newcomer, Jr.; and sisters, Alda M. Knodel and Elizabeth Marion.The family wishes to express their appreciation to the entire staff of College Pines for the loving care shown to Elsie.Memorial services will be held at 2:30 pm, Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service. Interment of the ashes will be at 2:15 pm, Sunday in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to PWNC to support the medical mission of Dr. Barbara Nagy at Nkhoma Hospital in Nkhoma, Malawi, Africa, c/o Presbytery of Western North Carolina, 114 Silver Creek Rd., Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
