Elizabeth "Betty" Baer Conway, 92 of Morganton, NC died Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Grace Heights. Born in Lancaster County, PA into the Mennonite faith on April 1, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Frank Nissley Baer and Emma Elizabeth Musselman Baer. She was raised on the family farm in Pennsylvania. She later attended college and graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree as a Dietician. At the time of her marriage, she and her husband, Dick Conway, joined the Presbyterian Church where she remained a member until her death.
Her life was a life of service to others. She and her husband assisted in the planting and charter of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain, Ga. Soon after the church's inception, Betty continued to develop, manage and direct the church's kindergarten program.
Soon after retiring to Morganton, she joined her good friend in starting the local chapter of the Friendship Force of Western NC Foothills region. Betty also initiated and developed the Primetimers group at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton, where the program actively continues today. She was a multi decade member of the Women's Sunday School Bible Class at First Presbyterian, active in Circle activities, and was honored to receive a lifetime membership in Presbyterian Women.
Betty's life and legacy was that of unconditional love for all God's children; with a steadfast, faithful and enduring belief in the God of creation, Jesus Christ and the truth of His living Word. She never met a stranger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Richard P. (Dick) Conway, who died in2009; brothers, Orie and Harold Baer; and a sister, Emma DeMuth.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Patrick Conway, II and wife, Lori of Morganton, Tim L. Conway of Lake Worth, FL, Thomas B. Conway and wife, Wanda of Newport, NC, and Jeffrey S. Conway and wife, Kay of Flowery Branch, GA; a daughter, Beth A. Conway of Duluth, GA; grandchildren, Ricky Conway and wife Anca, Kurt, Christie, and Cara Conway, Jonathan, Anthony, and Michael Conway, Maggie Delaney and husband, Brian, Kacie Conway, Bradley Conway and wife, Ashley, Anna Conway, Elizabeth Cadenhead and husband, Jason, and Katie Greenhaw; great grandchildren, Lucas and Emma Conway, Lillian and Jay Cadenhead; and her faithful canine companion, Sandy.
The graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 2014 at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Dysartsville Rd., Morganton. The memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Friday at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center and following the memorial service at the church on Saturday.
