Elizabeth “Beth” Gaither Erwin, 62, of Morganton passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020.  Born in Surry County, NC on April 4, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Will Pearson Erwin and Frances Jamison Erwin.  Beth grew up in Morganton and was a 1976 graduate of Freedom High School.  She graduated from NC State University with a bachelor’s degree in math, and she was employed as a math teacher for 30 years in the Virginia Beach, VA school system.

Following her retirement in 2012, she moved back to Morganton and devoted herself to working with animal rescue groups to help find loving homes for dogs.  She never met a stranger without asking if they had or wanted a dog.  Beth was a true champion of the 4-legged, furry babies that she loved with all her heart.  She enjoyed boating on Lake James and taking friends to see the lake and its majestic scenery.  The friendships she made through the Healing Dragons of Lake James dragon boat team sustained and supported her throughout her last days.

Beth is survived by her sisters, Susan Erwin Snipes (Ben) of Lancaster, SC and Janice E. Williams of Winston-Salem, NC; nieces, Laura Williams, Carrie Williams, and Caroline Connelly Epley; great-nephews, Ben Williams, Eli Williams, Dustin Epley (Jessica), and Cody Epley; great-nieces, Emily Connelly; great-great-nephew, Reid Epley; and great-great-niece, Whitley Bragg.

In addition to her parents, Beth was preceded in death by a sister, Regina Erwin; and her beloved pet, Casey.

A celebration of Beth’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rusty’s Legacy, 139 Lytle Mountain Road, Marion NC 28752 or at www.helprustys.com.
