Edna Singleton Woods, 84, of Newton went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.  Born in Burke County on June 3, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Grady and June Barrier Singleton.

Edna was a sweet, gracious, classy lady with a beautiful smile and a dry sense of humor.  She loved her family, loved the mountains, and was compassionate to all people.  She never hesitated to lend a helping hand when she could.  She retired from Farmers Home Administration and enjoyed gardening, reading, animals, and cooking.  She had a talent for decorating beautiful and delicious cakes; her cookies were the best.

Mrs. Woods is survived by her daughters, Terry (David) of Texas and Carol Childress (Jeff) of Newton; step-granddaughters, Brandie Tucker and Randie Conner; sister, Thelma Givens; brother, Joe Singleton; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and caregivers who love her and will miss her very much.

In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Woods; and brothers, Ray and Ralph Singleton.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 12 p.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral will follow at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Warren Marcum officiating.  Burial will follow in Barrier Family Cemetery in Jonas Ridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361 or to the Barrier Cemetery Fund, c/o Melvin Barrier, 7264 Parkway Road, Newland, NC 28657.
