Edith C. Rhyne, 94, of Rora Ave, Valdese, NC, died Monday, February 4, 2008 at Grace Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Saltville, VA on May 11, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Campbell and Elmira Vandora Vance Campbell. Edith was a member of First Christian Church in Saltville. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Morganton. For a number of years she worked for the Mica Company in Spruce Pine, NC. She loved to knit, sew, and do crossword puzzles. She also loved the NC beaches, especially Ocean Isle.Edith is survived by her children, Claude A. Campbell, and wife, JoAnn, of Boone, NC, Kenneth F. Rhyne and wife, Alice, of Glen Alpine, NC, Jerry Rhyne of Glen Alpine, Patrick Rhyne and wife, Gayle, of Wade, NC, and Patricia Walker and husband, Warren, of Valdese; a sister, Virginia Ruth Aker of Radford, VA; a special caregiver, Vickie Harrell; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Vance Phillip Jones; brothers, Lewis Campbell and Jim Campbell; and a sister, Eddie Campbell.A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Valdese, with Rev. Jack Hodges officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Sossoman Funeral Home, Morganton from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence of her daughter, Patricia Walker. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ladies VFW Auxiliary, 557 Hopewell Road, Morganton, NC 28655, Mountain Grove Baptist Church, 2485 Connelly Springs Road, Granite Falls, NC 28630, or to Mount Calvary Building Fund, 704 Praley Street, SW, Valdese, NC 28690.
