Dr. Larry M. Fleming, 77, of Morganton, NC passed away Saturday, January 21, 2017.  Born in Burke County, NC on March 29, 1939, he was the son of the late Robert Carl Fleming and Mary Elizabeth Battle Fleming.  Dr. Fleming was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was a former trustee and youth leader.

A graduate of Morganton High School, he attended N.C. State University for 3 years and received his bachelor’s and O.D. degrees from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1963 and 1964.  Dr. Fleming was a former member and officer in the Morganton Jaycees, a Boy Scout leader, and served on the Ski Patrol at Sugar Mountain for over 30 years.  He was also a member of the NC Optometric Society.  From 1970 to 2015, he worked on several missions in Bolivia, Kenya, South Africa, Transkei (where he and the family lived for a year), and Haiti.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Dr. Fleming is survived by his wife, Babette Eberle Fleming of the home; sons, Larry “Chip” Fleming, Jr., Edward Fleming and wife, Heather, and Andrew Fleming and wife Christy, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Landyn Fleming, Kyle Fleming, Courtney Fleming, Felicia Priese, Molly Priese, Nathan Priese, Alexis Allen, Micalah Allen, Graham Fleming, Elizabeth Brown, Alex Brown, and Hannah Fleming; and great-grandchildren, Lucas Neubauer, Lillian Neubauer, Liam Burhans, and Lincoln Burhans.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Fleming was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Carl Fleming, Jr.

The memorial service will be held at 4 pm, Sunday, January 29, 2017 at First United Methodist Church (200 N. King Street, Morganton) with the Rev. Dr. John Fowler and the Rev. Holly Adams officiating.  The family will greet friends at the church following the service.
