Dr. John Isaac Barron, Sr. passed away peacefully on March 17, 2014 at the age of ninety-eight. He was a resident of Morganton, North Carolina. He was born on December 7, 1915, in Jonesboro, Tennessee and was the second son of Quintus Deadrick Barron and Viola Estelle Walter Barron. He had an older brother Quintus Deadrick Barron Jr. and younger sister, Frances Evelyn Barron. He grew up in Bristol, Tennessee and graduated from King College in 1938 with a Bachelor’s degree. He worked for three years as a commercial airline pilot with TWA, and then for three years as a Flight Commander and Instructor for the Army Air Corp.He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine, class of 1950. He then completed an Internship at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee before settling in Morganton, NC where he established his Medical practice. Dr. Barron provided outstanding professional, personal medical service to his patients for over half a century; he was a member of the Grace Hospital Medical Staff for fifty years and was a past President and Secretary of Staff at Grace Hospital in Morganton, North Carolina.Dr. Barron was an active member of the community: he was a past President of the Morganton Kiwanis Club and member for fifty-two years; a member of the Burke County Medical Society and the North Carolina Medical Society for fifty-one years; a member of the American Medical Association for fifty years; a Member Emeritus of the Southern Medical Association; and a member of the First Baptist Church of Morganton, NC.Dr. Barron married Nelle Elizabeth Woodbury, the daughter of Luke Woodbury and Joy Freeman Woodbury, on August 30, 1942. They were married for sixty-two years and were blessed with three children: Janice, John and Bill.He was preceded in death by his wife Nelle and son John Isaac Barron, Jr.He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Janice Elizabeth Barron Rushing and husband Dr. Lige Rushing of Dallas, TX; son William Ellis Barron and wife Tehreema Mitha Barron, of Bethesda, MD; and daughter-in-law, Dori Barron, of Morganton, NC; five grandchildren: Raven Moira Barron, and husband Jason M. Brown, Sarah Mareiko Barron Yoder, and husband Neil R. Yoder, Caitlin Nelle Barron, Isaac Woodbury Barron, and Maheyaar Ellis Barron. He also had three great-grandchildren: Wyatt McChesney Brown, Zoe Catherine Brown, and Riley Makenna Yoder.A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 23, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Morganton. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service.Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western North Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
