Dr. Elzie Franklin “Hank” Hart, 73, of Morganton, NC died Friday, March 4, 2016.  Born in Alamance County, NC on August 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Elzie Franklin Hart and Margaret Leone Campbell Hart.  Dr. Hart was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

He completed his high school education at Walter Williams High School in Burlington, NC, received his B.S. in medicine from UNC Chapel Hill, graduated from the UNC School of Medicine, completed an internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY, performed his general surgery residency training at UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of General Surgery, and finally completed his graduate residency training at UNC’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Hart served with the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1970, attached to the U.S. Army as a medical officer.  He then served as an induction station physician in Beckley, WV.

Dr. Hart was currently active on the surgical staff of Grace, McDowell, and Valdese Hospitals.  He was a clinical assistant professor for the Department of Surgery at UNC School of Medicine.  He also served as a consultant for Broughton Hospital, Western Carolina Center (J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center), NC School for the Deaf, NC Department of Corrections Facility for Youthful Offenders, NC Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, NC Department of Crippled Children Services, and for the NC Department of Disability Determination Services.  Dr. Hart has also maintained a private practice in Morganton since 1974.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bass Hart of the home; children, Kelly Hart Pope (Jason) of Morganton, Craig F. Hart (Elizabeth) of Rock Hill, SC, Joshua Parham (Gary) of Morganton, and Jonathan S. Parham (Dennis) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Lucy, Samuel, and Carly Hart of Rock Hill and Matthew, Amelia, and Elizabeth Pope of Morganton; a brother, Otis Harrison Hart of Gastonia, NC; brothers-in-law, James Bass (Gail) of Lenoir, NC, Thomas Bass (Kelly) of Hickory, NC, and Joseph Bass (Pamela) of Lenoir; and nephews, Dustin Bass (Crystal), Colt Bass (Tatia), Blake Bass, Joseph Bass, and Justin Bass (Chelsea).

In addition to his parents, Dr. Hart was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, James E. Bass and Viola M. Bass of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Monday, March 7, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m., Monday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Marshall Jolly and the Rev. Dcn. Michael Jenkins officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
