Douglas Ray Evans, 88, of Morganton, NC passed away Thursday, June 20, 2019. Born on April 1, 1931, he was the son of the late John and Keron Evans. Douglas served in the US Army where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Occupational Medal with clasp (Japan), United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Medal with six Bronze Service Stars. He was a graduate of Hildebran High School and NC State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He retired from Great Lakes Carbon Corporation, as a plant engineer. Douglas was an avid farmer and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Douglas is survived by his daughter, Edith Evans-Bisbee and spouse; sons, John Evans (Dawn) and Rev. Michael Evans (Dell); grandchildren, Joshua Evans, Rachel Evans, David Evans, Jordan Bisbee, Ethan Bisbee; great-granddaughter, Erin Joy Bisbee; sisters, Sylvia Chapman and Teresa Childers; brothers, Harold Evans (Nora) and Wayne Evans (Becky); and many loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, Douglas is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Joyce Harklerode Evans.

The family will receive friends from 11a.m. until noon, Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Revs. Fred Schuszler and Michael Evans officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at McDowell Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by the NC National Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gate – Gateway to Independence, PO Box 6033, Maryville TN 37802. The Gate is a nonprofit organization for adults with disabilities where his grandson Joshua attends.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
