Donald “Don” Reichard, 66, of Newton, NC passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017. Born in Burke County, NC on May 17, 1951, he was the son of the late Finley Augusta Reichard, Jr. and Jayne Seagle Reichard. He graduated from Morganton High School in 1969. Don was a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces during the Vietnam War.
He began his law enforcement career at the Hickory Police Department, later retiring from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) after 30 years. Following a short retirement, he began his second career at Corning Optical Communications as head of security.
Don is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gail Huffman Reichard of the home; son, Jason Reichard of Newton; daughter, Jessica Reichard of Concord, NC; his pride and joy, grandson, Ethan Reichard of Newton; brother, Tom Reichard and wife, Jamie, of Newton; sister, Phyllis Hildebrandt and husband, Geno, of Cedar Park, TX; god-daughter, Laura Readling Taylor of Hope Mills, NC; and several nieces, nephews, and furry animals, Abby, Kami, Duchess, and Buster.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 pm, Monday, July 24, 2017 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral will be held at 3pm in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Don Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
