Dewey Fox, 77, of Morganton, NC passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012 at home with his loving family. Born in Burke County, NC on June 25, 1934, he was the son of the late William Austin Fox and Hettie Belle Harris Fox of Morganton, NC. Dewey attended and graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1953 and entered the US Army. He served a distinguished military career and retired in 1973, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Three (CW3). Dewey served two tours of duty in Vietnam and numerous overseas assignments while serving in the Army. Some of his honorable military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. Additional awards include the Vietnam Campaign Medal with sixteen campaign stars, Vietnam Civil Actions Service Medal (3 awards) and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.Dewey is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy Austin Fox; children, Pamela Favor of Norfolk, VA, Linda Jones and husband, Gary, of Bowling Green, KY, Brian Fox and wife, Candace, of Bowling Green, KY and Shane Fox (CW2, US Army) and wife Tonja, of Fort Riley, KS. Also, Dewey is survived by eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a brother, Hylon Fox of Morganton. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins within Burke County.Dewey’s passion in life was rooted in spending loving time with his family and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors and crafting wood projects in his workshop. He spent endless hours with family and special friends fishing, hunting, and engaging in fellowship at every opportunity. Moreover, Dewey gained great joy by helping others within the church and the community. He was a loving man and dedicated to the service of our Lord.In addition to his parents, Dewey was preceded in death by three brothers, Ned, Ben and Kirby Fox; and a sister Georgia Henson.The family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. A private graveside service will be held at the North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the House of Refuge, P.O. Box 1371, Morganton, NC 28680 or to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 352, Morganton, NC 28680.
