Clyde Boyce "Daddy Clyde" Baker, 93, of Morganton, NC departed to his Heavenly home on Saturday, September 27, 2014. Born in the Big Pine Community of Madison County, NC on April 25, 1921, he was the son of the late General Baker and Edith Payne Baker. Clyde was a WWII Veteran who served in the European Campaign including the Battle of the Bulge. Clyde and his wife enjoyed keeping children and they were referred to by many as "Mama Baker" and "Daddy Clyde". His hobbies were visiting friends, farming and gardening. Clyde was married to the love of his life for 67 years until she passed. They were reunited Saturday on their 74th wedding anniversary.
He is survived by children, Howard Baker and wife, Louise, Wilma Woody and husband, Steve, Betty Fowler and husband, Mike all of Morganton; grandchildren, Jennifer West and husband, Jason, Steven Woody, Josh Fowler and wife, Stacey, Alex Fowler; great grandchildren, Jesse West, Joseph West, Jonas West, Julia West; brothers, Bobby Baker and wife, Shirley, Ohlen Baker and wife, Roxanne all of Morganton; and sister in law, Ruth Baker.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Venita Roberts Baker; brother, Cecil Baker; and sister, Inez Henderson.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with Dr. Dewey Thomas and Rev. Dr. J.D. Grant officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral.
