Cloyd Alexander Curtis, 97, of Morganton entered the pearly gates on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 and is now standing on that beautiful shore.  Born in Caldwell County, NC on September 4, 1922, he was the son of the late Walter Washington Curtis and Della Bentley Curtis.  Cloyd was a member of Central Baptist Church.  He was a US Army veteran of WWII and was very proud to be part of liberating a concentration camp in Germany.  He was nominated for a Purple Heart but refused to accept it.  He enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, and woodworking, but he most enjoyed spending time with his family.

A devoted husband, father, and pawpaw, Cloyd is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty Helen Rathburn Curtis of the home; sons, Randy Curtis (Linda) and Robin Curtis (Terry); grandchildren, Jennifer Walker, Amber Summers, and Garrett Curtis; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Curtis; half-brothers, Ray, Clyde, Bob, and Charles Curtis; half-sister, Pat Huntley; and a number of step-brothers, step-sisters, nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

In addition to his parents, Cloyd was preceded in death by his step-mother, Ruth Curtis; brothers, Loyd, Ernest, Howard, Luther, Carl, and John Curtis; sisters, Roena Terrell, Ruth Carswell, and Mae Ferguson; half-brothers, Dean and Buck Curtis; and a great-grandson, William Cole Walker.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Steve Curtis officiating.  Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Carolina Caring Hospice and/or to Conway’s Chapel Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their gratitude for Kris Lenterdre and Reba Rogers for their loving care of Cloyd.
