Claude S. Wellman, 81, of Morganton, NC, left his earthly body and stepped over into glory, Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Born in Burke County, NC on December 27, 1942, he was the son of the late Albert Wellman and Tessie H. Wellman. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Huffman.

At 2:57 on February 20, 2024, his beautiful wife, Ruby lost her best friend and the love of her life 61 years, 7 months, and 22 days. What a beautiful journey they had.

Claude was a member of Walkers Chapel Baptist Church. He was a gentle giant and dearly loved his family. He especially loved it when his grandchildren would come and visit him. Racing was a lifelong passion that started in the late 60’s. His racing family meant a lot to him. Claude enjoyed sitting in the swing on his front porch with his dog, Peanut. He loved to go fishing with his son, Allen. Claude was the best husband and father. He will be missed dearly by his wife and three children.

Mr. Wellman is survived by his wife, Ruby S. Wellman; children, Allen Wellman, Kimberly Buckner (Jimmy), and Patricia Messer (David); eight grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Wellman (Dorothy); and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at 3 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2024, at Mr. Wellman’s residence.

Claude lived by Proverbs 13:24.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Walker's Chapel Baptist Church or to Gideons International.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I hate to hear that Claude has passed on- He was a very intelligent person that could do just about anything- He was a very dear friend of my father, Howard Abee- The 2 of them used to fish alot together and do alot of other things too- Now, they are both in Heaven, talking about old fishing trips, car racing and how there gardens are doing- He will be dearly missed;; Dwayne Abee;;

Claude was a friend and fellow racer with my Dad(Earl Barlow). They met at the race track and became friends. Though my Dad raced mini stock and he used the #8 as his number because he admired Claude as a driver and friend. My dad passed in June 2018 and I’m sure they are catching up on all the good times and laughter they shared. Our prayers for your family is to find that peace and comfort that only our Lord can deliver in the coming days and beyond. Love & Prayers from or family to yours.

Ruby and family I hated to hear the news of Claude passing. He was a great man and racing competitor that I'm proud I could call him my friend. Know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers now and in the days to come
