Charles Edwin Wilson, 90, of Morganton passed away, Monday, February 20, 2012. Born in Burke County, NC on August 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Solomon Ezekiel Wilson and Gertrude White. Charles was a graduate of Morganton High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He retired from Drexel Furniture Company after 38 years. Charles was an avid golfer and gardener, as well as a lifelong master woodworker who made scores of grandfather clocks and many other wood projects.A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 70 years, Katherine Powell Wilson of the home; sons, R. Dean Wilson and wife, Anne, and Don C. Wilson and wife, Kathy, both of Morganton; a daughter, Linda W. Hindman and husband, Wayne, of Travelers Rest, SC; grandchildren, Diana Wilson, Amy Clarke Burns, Jana Delarosa, Nathan Clark, and Jameson Clark; great-grandchildren, Riley Clark, Morgan Clark, Gage Mealor, Matt Burns, and Darby Burns; a brother, Andrew W. Wilson of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Winston "Sonny" Wilson; and sisters, Sue Widenhouse, Virginia Warlick, and Edith Hope Wilson.The graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bob Shepherd officiating. Military honors will be provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., Thursday at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Burke County Chapter, 305-A West Union St., Morganton, NC 28655.
