Charlene Newton Carpenter, 86, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
Born in Cleveland County, NC on September 1, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Clifton “Tip” Newton and Zelma Lindsay Newton.
Charlene was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church where she taught children’s church and was known as Sunday Granny. Mrs. Carpenter worked at Burke/Caldwell Water, Carolina Shoe, and retired from food service at Burke County Public Schools. She was an avid bird watcher, loved raising flowers, and enjoyed word searches. She loved being with her family, especially her children and grandchildren who she loved with all her heart.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Charlene is survived by her children, Mark Carpenter (Tammy), Bruce Carpenter (Sheila), and Jane Crisp (Mark); grandchildren, Lindsay, Sarah, Logan, John, Jason, Amber, and Jordan; great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Stella, and Gabby; sister, Melba N. Floyd; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Willis Carpenter.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Buster King and Dr. Bradley Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow in Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in Casar, P.O. Box 326, Casar, NC 28020.

Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Charlene at Carolina Shoe in the 80’s, she was a dear friend, she had a beautiful soul and she loved her family. She would tell me about her trips to see her sister and how she hated the gorge. Precious memories. She loved her family beyond measure. Will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
