Cecil P. Chapman, 91, of Conley St., Morganton, NC died Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health. Born in Catawba County, NC on September 3, 1916, he was a son of the late Boston and Lula Denton Chapman Huffman. Cecil was a retired Sergeant with the U. S. Army, serving in both World War II and Korea. Following his retirement from the Army, he served for two years in the U. S. Navy. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Chapman was a Thirty Second Degree Mason and a member of Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge #217. He attended Walker Road Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Boyd "Jack" Chapman and James Chapman; half brother, Bobby Joe Huffman; sister, Pearl Harris; and half sister, Peggy Dale.Surviving are his wife, Versie Carswell Chapman of the home; step-sons and their wives, Joe and Loreen Carswell and Daryl and Penny Carswell all of Morganton; a step-daughter, Kay Barker of North Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Helen Monaco of Morganton; three step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and two nephews and five nieces.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Jill Rhinehart officiating and with Masonic Rites by the Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors by Valdese American Legion Post 234. The family will receive friends for thirty minutes before the funeral. Memorial gifts may be made to Walker Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 100 Walker Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
