Carl Sisler Memmel, 96, of Morganton, NC, passed away quietly on August 13, 2022.

Born in Tampa, FL on September 22, 1925, Carl spent his early days with his dog Topsy close by his side.  At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Army and was a proud soldier in the 11th airborne.  He served in the Pacific theatre and was one of the first to land in Japan.  As a paratrooper, he said that he jumped out of an airplane once and was pushed out all the other times.  During this period, he was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart, and Bronze Star.  Years later he reflected on his WWII experience, writing articles about the battles and the challenges this amazing generation faced.

After the war, he returned home to Tampa where he met his wife to be, Lenora, and they married.  Soon after, they started a family raising 3 sons: Mike, Pat, and Curt.  Carl worked for GE primarily in their lighting division in several operational roles.  This took him from Tampa to Atlanta and finally to Cleveland.  After retirement they went back to Florida for a few years and eventually moved to Morganton where they lived for over 20 years.

Carl enjoyed spending time at his grandson’s sporting events and would cheer them on and offer unique gestures of support.  He valued his time with his friends from several veteran organizations.  He also appreciated his buddies from the rec center workout room where he would exercise free speech while pumping iron.

Carl was preceded in death by Lenora and his son, Patrick.

He is fondly remembered by his family, Mike his wife, Ellen, and their children, Rachel, Mary Beth, Caleb, and great granddaughter Elise; Curt and his wife, Trudy, who lovingly cared for him the past few years and their children, Cody, Reid, Spencer, and Pierce.

The family would like to give special thanks to LaDarra Sherrill who was more than a caregiver to Carl, Megan Huffman who compassionately helped them navigate this journey, and the amazing teams from VIA Health Partners and The Berkeley.

Services for Mr. Memmel will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you hug your loved ones and offer a random act of kindness to those in need.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
