Captain Richard C. Williams, USN (Ret.), 68, of Nebo, NC passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at his residence, while surrounded by his family.  Born in Beckley, WV on May 24, 1948, he was the son of the late Duke and Kathryne Williams.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, NC.

Captain Williams retired from the U.S. Navy, having served in various capacities in aviation, including Executive Officer of NAS Atlanta.  He served as Commanding Officer of the NJROTC program at McDowell High School.

An avid marksman, Captain Williams was an instructor for several marksman courses in western North Carolina.  He enjoyed being active in the Marion Lake Club and loved playing with his grandchildren.

Captain Williams is survived by his wife, Cathy Dayton Williams of the home; children, Stacy Amber Potwin and husband, Steven, of Beckley, WV; Carolyn Davis of Fletcher, NC; and Ryan Jennings and wife, Jesseca, of Powder Springs, GA; grandchildren, Grayson, Carter, Morgan, and Jace; his former wife, Vicki R. Williams; a brother, James Williams and Cindy Hungate of Beckley; a nephew, Richard Williams and wife, Patricia; and a great-nephew, Degan.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Marion.  The funeral will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, June 9 at the church with the Rev. Warren Owens officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the McDowell High School NJROTC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post #56, P.O. Box 457, Marion, NC 28752.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
