Candice Candy Harris Smith, 74, of Morganton peacefully joined her Lord and Savior after a lengthy battle with Cancer. Born in Burke County on February 3, 1951 to the late Mary Seagle Harris and Henry Sonny Harris. Candy was part of the 1970 graduating class from Glen Alpine High School. Candy spent most of her career at J. Iverson Riddle Center as a health care tech and CNA. After retiring from J. Iverson Riddle Center, she loved spending time keeping a pristine lawn and flower garden. She loved cats and rescued all of the cats she owned, many were feral but quickly spoiled into domestication by the love and patience that Candy gave them. Candy was known for her fudge that she would make each year at Christmas time. She had many friends and loved spending time with friends and family. Her favorite of all was spending time with her beloved grandson, Nicholas.

Those left to cherish precious memories of Candy include her grandson, Nicholas Johnson of Clintwood, Virginia. Fraternal aunts, Nancy Beck, Linda Curtis (Randy), and Carolyn Teseneer (Ronald) all of Morganton. Candy also leaves behind numerous friends, cousins, her feline babies; Callie, Deana, China Doll, Toby, and Trumpy; and a dear friend and neighbor, Shirley Cane.

In addition to her parents, Candy was preceded in death by her daughter, Sonia Sandy Johnson, Sandys father, Riddle Smith and her favorite cat, Smokey.

The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at Glen Alpin Cemetery.

Candys family would like to thank Amorem of Burke County for the kindness and comfort in her last days, and the Willing Workers group at First Baptist Church of Marion for building a ramp to help with mobility.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Amorem at 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645, Cats Cradle at PO Box 1915, Morganton, NC 28680-1915, or Willing Workers Ramp Fund c/o First Baptist Church of Marion, 99 N. Main St., Marion, NC 28752.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

She was my beloved baby cousin. She was the most beautiful baby and I adored her. She didn’t have to walk if I was around because I would carry her everywhere. I know she is happy now being with her beloved family members who have gone on before her. She was dearly loved
