Bruce Alexander “Woody” Saulmon, 80, of the Oak Hill Community in Morganton, NC, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2025.
Born in Burke County, NC on May 26, 1945, he was the son of the late Edgar C. Saulmon and Alice Chester Saulmon.
Woody graduated from Berea College with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture. He served as a medic in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Star. Following his service, he began working as a deputy for the Burke County Sheriff’s office and later became a magistrate for Burke County. Woody loved to travel, having taken over 40 cruises, and he also loved to hunt.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 42 years, Wanda Roark Saulmon; children, Dean Smith (Sharon), Sandy Smith, and Linda K. Smith; grandson, Robert Dean Smith; great-grandson, Camron Prewitt; brother, Thomas Saulmon (Sue); sisters, Pat Peterson and Jane Lynk (Jim); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Woody was preceded in death by a grandson, Michell Prewitt; three brothers, Jack, Donald, and Ben Saulmon; and a sister, Alma Gates.
The family will have a private family service for Woody in the spring.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I still live in Virginia, however, when I saw this name, I knew he was a relative. I vaguely remember going to grandfather Chester’s cabin and playing in the loft. I do remember Woody from those visits. Some of my favorite memories are at the cabin. If you have not guessed by now, I’m Enoch’s oldest daughter. I’m sure your loss is great and I’m sure God will give you peace.

Woody was a fine man who will be missed greatly. My wife and I are terribly saddened to hear about his passing. We will never forget him.
