Billy "Bill" David Campbell, 87, of Morganton, N.C., went home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, to be with the Lord after several years of declining health. Bill was born in Cherokee County, SC on July 14th, 1936, to the late David Onzelow Campbell and Lila Mae Ingle Campbell. Bill was a graduate of Morganton High School. After graduation, Bill enlisted in the N.C. Army National Guard (30th Old Hickory Division) where he served with distinction for 24 years until his retirement at the rank of Staff-Sargent (E-6). In addition to his career in the military, Bill had a long and successful career as an auto mechanic for various dealerships in the Morganton area before his retirement from Martin Family Ford. In addition to his work as a mechanic, Bill was an avid antique car collector and restorer. Over the years he won many First Place and/or Best of Show awards for his restored vehicles in various local car shows and cruise in's. Bill was a lifelong member of Mt. Home Baptist Church where he previously served on the Board of Deacons and as a long-time member of the church choir. Though now gone, Bill will always be remembered in the hearts and minds of his many friends and family.

Bill is survived by the love of his life, Marlene Simmons Campbell, with whom he was married for over 61 years. From their meeting in high school until his death, theirs was a true love story that transcended over six decades. In addition to his loving wife, Marlene, Bill is survived by his sister, Barbara Rosemarkle of Spindale, N.C„ his sister-in-law, Coila Simmons Hawkins, of Morganton, N.C., sister-in-law, Brenda Newton Simmons of Kingsport, Tennessee, Sister-in-law Brenda Simmons Druelle, and husband Don Druelle, of North Augusta, S.C., sister-in law Sharron Simmons Triggs, and husband, C. Gary Triggs, of Bethlehem, N.C., as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2pm, Sunday October 8, 2023 Mt. Home Baptist Church in Morganton, N.C. with Interim Pastor, John Conrad and Associate Pastor, Rocky Hartman officiating. Military honors provided by the representatives of the NC National Guard. Following the burial, the family will receive friends in the old fellowship hall of Mt. Home Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Mt. Home Baptist Church General Fund, 2272 Mt. Home Church Rd., Morganton, N.C. 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
