Betty V. Brown, 100, of Morganton, NC passed away, Sunday, March 10, 2024. Born on April 8, 1923, in Elyria, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Karl and Viola Von Duyke. Betty was a member of First United Methodist Church Morganton where she and her late husband, Truman, ushered for many years, sang in the choir, and was even named the oldest member of the church at one time. She worked as a legal secretary at Burke Law Firm for 30 years. She loved to golf with friends and her greatest skill was her ability to sew, making her own clothes including a suit for Truman. Betty also loved to knit where she, a member of Charlotte’s Knitters at FUMC, made many prayer shawls for church members and nursing home patients. After recently moving to Grace Ridge, Betty was still a very active and independent woman.

Betty is survived by her sisters, Norma Anderson of Lakewood, CO and Viola Jean Hahn of Elyria, OH; brothers, Martin K. Von Duyke, Fairplay CO and Thomas R. Von Duyke of Broomfield CO, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Truman H. Brown, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 4pm, Tuesday, March 26, 2023 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dana McKim officiating. A cryptside service will follow in the church columbarium. The service will be live-streamed beginning at 4 pm, on the Facebook page of First United Methodist Church Morganton (https://www.facebook.com/fumcmorganton) or YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@firstumcmorganton9267/streams).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to FUMC Discretionary Fund, 200 N. King Street, Morganton, NC 28655, Western Piedmont Foundation for Burke Collegiate Scholars, or Community Foundation of Burke County.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
