Betty Jo Small Grady, 79, of Randolph Street, Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 8, 2008 at Grace Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Burke County, NC on March 15, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ivey Ernest Small and Bertie Lee Clontz Small. Betty was a member of North Morganton Baptist Church.

She enjoyed singing and playing gospel music on the piano. She was a talented painter with an extraordinary appreciation for all of God’s creations. Betty enjoyed her work as owner/operator of Riverside Fish Camp. She loved her customers and meeting people. She loved Burke County History and had an extensive knowledge of its genealogy. She will be greatly missed and was a precious friend to many.A great mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, she is survived by a son, Thomas P. Grady, Jr. of Morganton; daughters, Beverly G. Seeds and husband, Kim, of Bethlehem, NC and Andrea G. Ferris of the home; sisters, Marie Cheatham of Jonas Ridge, NC, Evelyn Conyers of Morganton, and Sarah Woody and husband, Paul, of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Pinkney Grady, Sr.; a daughter, Judith E. Woods; three brothers; and one sister.The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 11, 2008 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Reverends Bob Devinney and Kenny Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, c/o Burke County Shrine Club, P.O. Box 695, Morganton, NC 28680.
