“Maw has gone home to be with the Lord.” Bertha Lowdermilk Powell, 94 of Valdese, NC passed away Monday, January 11, 2021.  Born March 12, 1926 in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Douglas Lowdermilk and Eunice Whisenant Lowdermilk.

Mrs. Powell was a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister that dearly loved her family. Bertha graduated from Morganton High School and worked 20+ years in the textile industry. She enjoyed taking care of all children. Working in her garden and growing flowers was one of her many pleasures. Mrs. Powell put others before herself and always took care of those in need. She was truly a prayer warrior and had previously attended Drexel Christian Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Ellen Mull (Dennis); sons, Johnnie Powell, Jr. (Patricia), Leon Nelson Powell (Barbara), and Thad David Powell (Sandra); daughter-in-law, Elaine Powell; grandchildren, Kim Siddons (Jeff), Dawn Crawford (Shane), Tammy Ritchie (Mark), Todd Mull, Jeff Mull (Heather), April Beam (Wesley), Jonathan Powell, Chris Powell (Misty), Keith Powell (Leia), and Terri Duckworth; seventeen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Conner (Earl), Joann Pritchard (Roy), Linda Stillwell (Dewey), and Mildred Crump (Joe); brother, Bill Lowdermilk; sister-in-law, Marie Lowdermilk; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Powell; son, James Douglas Powell; grandson, Jaimie Nelson Powell; step-mother, Mary Alice Lowdermilk; brothers, Manford Lowdermilk, Eugene Lowdermilk, and Walter Lowdermilk; and infant sister, Sissy.

Mrs. Powell will be available for viewing from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The funeral will follow at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastors Tim Smith, Lee Russell, and Grey Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
