Bennie Lee Powell "MawMaw" Bailey, 93, of Morganton, NC died Saturday, February 5, 2011 following a period of declining health. Born on October 13, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Ira Elmer Powell and Mary Ellen Phillips. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Dysartsville Road.Bennie is survived by her sons, Paul Ray Bailey and wife, Nancy, and Earl Franklin Bailey and wife, Frances; daughters, Faye Bailey Lail and husband, Hubert, and Mary Ellen Bailey Lesley and husband, Dwayne; grandchildren, Michael Ray Bailey and wife, Laurie, Sherri McGimsey and husband, Eddie, Lori Bailey Hensley and husband, Mike, Douglas Wilson Lail, Robert Keith Lail and wife, Paula, Lisa Lail McKee and husband, Stewart, Jarrod Bailey and wife, Kathy, and Tyler Hensley; great-grandchildren, Jackson Emerson Bailey, Charles Ryan Bailey, Matthew McGimsey, Nicholas McGimsey, Clarissa Crooks, Kristin Edwards, Amber Lail, Jessica McKee, and Kyle McKee; a number of great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Inez Hemphill; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to her parents, Bennie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alfred Bailey; four brothers, Lester Powell, Ed Powell, Eugene Powell, and James Vernon Powell; and four sisters, Gladys Padgett, Annie Kelly, Eva Pearson, and Mildred Dorothy Mayfield.The graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 7, 2011 at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery on Dysartsville Road with Reverends April Abernethy and Brad Farnham officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening at Sossoman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence of the daughter, Faye Lail. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.
