Benjamin Perkins Fleming, 86, of Morganton, NC, passed to his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 while surrounded by his family.

Born on November 5, 1936, he was the third son of the late Horace Frank Fleming and Margaret Arney Fleming.

Ben was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a soft-spoken and kind man.

Mr. Fleming was an active member of his church and served as chairman of the deacons. He was a member of the brotherhood, sang in the choir, and helped with numerous church projects. He was currently attending Praise Assembly of God.

Ben worked at SGL Carbon for over 40 years. He was meticulous with everything he did, and he took great pride in making sure his work was perfect. He was a veteran of the US Army.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Margaret Deal Fleming; son, Douglas Fleming and fiancée, Kat Hefner (and her daughter, Emily); grandsons, Josh Fleming and wife, Lisa, and Jake Fleming and fiancée, Jessica Edwards; his great-grandchildren, the apples of his eye, Caroline and Levi Fleming; sister-in-law, Nancy Fleming; and niece, Sonya Leigh Fleming.

In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Fleming and wife, Irene, Frank Fleming and wife, Betty, and Forrest A. Fleming; nieces, Rhonda C. Fleming and Beverly J. Roland; parents-in-law, Willie and Cora Lee Deal; and brothers-in-law, William P. Deal and wife, Louise, and Roben James Deal.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2023 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Revs. Kevin Crawford and Boyd Biggerstaff officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

The world has lost a great man. I'd known Ben since 1971, when I went to work at Great Lakes Carbon. I can't remember him ever having a bad thing to say about anything or anyone. I've long since been gone from GLC, having fallen victim to the purge of 1984, thus I'd lost contact with him. I have thought about him often.
